Tariel - World Map by Levodoom Tariel - World Map by Levodoom
Fullsize Version:
www.dropbox.com/s/6w1ah0kkn57u…

Roughly a year ago I decided that I wanted to redesign the Tariel map, and now I've finally finished it. This should be the definite version of the world map and shouldn't be subject to any more redesigns (I hope).

The map is fairly large, and is the largest map I've ever made. In fact, it's too large for any convenient image hosting site. As such, for those who want to view the fullsize version of the map, you'll have to directly download it from the link above.

What fonts are being used? This is beautiful. I especially love the parchment looking ocean, that blue is soooo velvety.

Sir, I just want to say that I LOVE your maps.  Carry on!

Edit: Actually if I had to levee any criticism it would be this:  The use of so many Mountain ranges is a tad distracting especially as border regions between territories (albeit considering the scale this isn't as bad as it could be).  It's honestly not that big of a deal but it is something I noticed.

Anyway like I said, it looks awesome man and is easily grade A material!

Your map is amazing and would be and incredible setting for a D&D game. I'm wondering if you have any other versions, perhaps landscape only?

Oh my god this map is amazing. It hits all my perfect needs for a fantasy map. Crisp colors, memorable continent formations, gigantic yet big enough to read, just excellent cartography all around. And the best part is, the names are evocative without being overly cheesy. That is a rare talent. Most maps I see have names that are either really boring or stupidly cheesy. So it has size, quality, and even some narrative power. The only bad thing about this map is that it'll make other maps seem tame in comparison.

I'm serious. I actually made a deviantart account just so I could comment on this awesome piece of work.

Did you use any special brushes or is this all by hand?

Nothing outside of the default photoshop brushes, so it's pretty much mostly by hand.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most stunning pieces of worldbuilding I've ever seen. I wish there was a way to properly convene how impressed I am, the amount of skill and time put into this must have been staggering. You, sir Levodoom, have my sincere congratulations.

This is very impressive. Extremely detailed and well-drawn. Is it part of a bigger project? Third Era from OriginWorlds is still a work-in-progress.

Thanks! This map belongs to the Third Era project, yes, which is a project I imagine will remain in work-in-progress for as long as it exists considering the scope of it.

I've been reading the site all day long, every single post about Third Era. Are you the only one working on this? This is an incredible amount of information to create, write, and the maps also. It's very impressive. It would amazing to see a video game or a novel based on this, it's just that good.

Yes, I'm pretty much alone in this endeavor, though I've been working on it on and off for years, so the amount of information has built up fairly slowly during that time to reach the point it is at now. I originally started the project with the purpose of writing a novel, but in the end I just never really got anywhere in doing so, mainly because I'm too lazy and can never sit down to write anything that would befit a novel. Potentially I might end up writing short stories instead, though, again, can never find the time or motivation to sit down and write such. Generally I just enjoy the world-building aspect of it all, though in future I hope to try to adapt my world to some form of media, video-game or otherwise. Still a long way off, of course.

Fantastic. It's so nice to see the Tariel world expanded. Had a look back at the previous version for comparison and that's quite a job you did on the rest of the continents! Well done!

Now you'll have to do an expanded map of Kyndar in the SE...kidding :P

Looking forward to more regional maps of Arganorh etc though.

why are some names of states and cities in red and others in blue?
also do you have a map of where what (intelligent) creatures live, like demographic maps of humans, songborn, dwarves, etc.?

Ruling nations/states are typically portrayed in red, and red cities are capitals of a given nation/state. Blue signifies a collection of independent city states or vassals/colonies/provinces, whilst blue cities are generally independent from any governing, national rule or collective state, though there are exceptions where some supposedly independent cities are under another nation's control, if even just by a minor amount of influence.

As for your second question the answer would have to be no, although I surmise that would be quite useful for future reference. The racial descriptions given on my site give some indication as to where the various races can be found throughout the world, though, admittedly, those descriptions are fairly outdated now and I intend to revisit them at some point, to correct misinformation and add more additional and concrete information regarding the different tribes/sub-races for each major race. As it stands a lot of the written lore on my website is in dire need of some correction after the world map was redesigned.

I too feel your pain of not being able to host maps that are too big. I really quite like the attention to detail on this though, having named just about everything. I also quite like the forests you made, simple but effective.

Thanks! I experimented with quite a few forest types but in the end the simpler ones proved to be the best in fitting along with the rest of the map. Unfortunately that's not to say it wasn't extremely tedious and time-consuming to draw them despite their simple look. Just glad that I won't have to do that again anytime soon.

Oh my gosh, the amount of thought you must have put into this is just staggering. Just the names give you insights into the amount of worldbuilding going on.

Thanks! The naming part was quite taxing since I had to consider what inspired cultures belonged where, and then find or come up with names that would fit them without using the same names twice. I've ended up anglicizing quite a few names, depending on what knowledge or experience I have of various real cultures and parts of the real world.
